The EdD is professionally focused - aimed primarily at experienced professionals working in education and related inter-agency services. This is an opportunity to pursue doctoral study in the context of your professional role, combining taught courses with independent research. We aim to promote critical self-reflection through a sequence of structured learning experiences, culminating in a thesis that is a substantial piece of professionally-focused education research. Your work will enable you to develop and use advanced research skills and so become an independent, reflective, competent researcher. You will also form an integral part of the university’s research community.

Course length
Part-time: 4-7years
The EdD comprises core courses and a choice of one of two pathway courses.
The core courses in the Masters section of the programme are Researching the Real World, parts one and two, and Writing as Academic Practice. Each taught course is assessed through two assignments.
You will also choose one of two options which define the pathway to the thesis: Learning and Teaching or Leading and Managing in Education. In addition, you will study doctoral level research modules, and prepare and present a research proposal, the successful completion of which, subject to approval by the university, provides entry to the doctoral thesis stage of the degree. The thesis stage usually takes two years.
As our courses are reviewed regularly, course content and pathway choices may change from the details here.
Teaching, learning and assessment
The taught element of the programme will be delivered both virtually and face to face. It is anticipated that teaching will normally be held on Saturdays with a minimum of eight a year, plus an Autumn residential, Friday evening and Saturday, at the start of the course.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testAdmission usually requires a master's degree, including evidence of a research-based project at postgraduate level in education, plus at least four years working as a professional in the area of study. We will normally admit up to 10 new students a year.
The successful completion of an education-focused master's in any education area will not necessarily guarantee a place on the doctoral programme. The process of entry is selective, and will normally include a face-to-face interview involving discussion of a recently completed piece of written work with an independent study focus at postgraduate level. The key issue will relate to whether there is adequate matching between the substantive education elements of the doctoral programme, supervisory support, and the applicant’s area of expertise and interests.
English language requirements
If English is not your main language then you will also need to show that your English is at a high enough level to succeed in your studies. You will need IELTS IELTS 6-7 (normally with 6.0 in Reading and Writing and a minimum of 5.5 in Listening and Speaking); TOEFL internet-based test 80-100 (with minimum scores in each section) or equivalent, depending on the course you have chosen to study.
