The School of Music offers a broad range of expertise, but the following areas are of particular strength:

* Bowed stringed instruments, especially violin and viola
* Keyboard instruments, especially piano, harpsichord and organ

Requirements for the Performance programme include the presentation of a public recital of a varied programme of approximately 90 minutes' duration and the submission of either (a) a dissertation (of 40,000 to 50,000 words) on an approved performance or voice/instrument-related subject or (b) an appropriate scholarly edition with commentary.

Requirements

Suitable for graduates in Music who wish to combine practical and academic musical study to doctoral level.

Candidates are normally expected to have a 1st or upper 2nd class Honours degree, or equivalent, and to have completed, or be about to complete, a taught Master's degree involving music. Applicants must also show evidence of appropriate skills in written and spoken English, research, music performance, plus foreign language skills (if relevant).

Note: International students pursuing part-time programmes of study are not eligible for Tier 4 General Student) visas and must have alternative leave to remain in the UK if they intend to study at the University in person.
