Cardiff welcomes applications from students interested in researching for a PhD in the specialist areas below. The school provides training and a high level of support, and the postgraduate community contributes vitally to the University's international reputation for research.
The Pharmacology group focuses on mechanisms of drug action at levels of organisation from intracellular sites, membranes and cells, through to tissues, organs and intact organisms.
Methodologies include enzyme purification, spectral analysis, immunoassay, radioligand binding, in situ hybridisation, RT-PCR, cDNA analysis, Western analysis and immunoprecipitation, proteome mapping, receptor cloning, cell culture, single cell electrophysiology, high pressure technology, in vitro drug-receptor assays, transgenics, immunocytochemistry of total and activated proteins, behavioural testing and in vivo cardiovascular and pulmonary pharmacology.
Current Research areas include:
* Cell signalling, especially in cancer and cardiovascular disease
* Airway diseases
* Smooth muscle pharmacology
* Neurodegenerative diseases
* Applications of chemo/bioluminescence
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

A 1st or upper 2nd class UK Honours degree, or equivalent is required. British/EU students must hold minimum of GCSE / 'O-level' English Language or equivalent (contact School for details). Overseas students should normally have 570 in TOEFL paper-based test, 250 in TOEFL computer-based test, or 6.5 in IELTS.
