The Institute of Development Research and Development Policy at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany offers an international and interdisciplinary three-year PhD program in International Development Studies. The program is entirely taught in English. The PhD in International Development Studies is embedded within the framework of the RUB Research School, a winner of the German Excellence Initiative.
Participants can choose from a variety of tailor-made teaching modules while at the same time working on their own research projects. A supervisor is assigned to each research project. Supervisors hold professorial posts at the Ruhr-University Bochum or other German Universities and are affiliated to one of the following disciplines: Economics, Social Sciences, Law, Geography. All of our supervisors are well trained and skilled experts, having far reaching experience in teaching, mentoring and research.
The PhD in International Development Studies is a combination of working on individual PhD research projects as well as participating in selected teaching modules. Teaching modules deal with developmental issues from a multidisciplinary perspective. These development-related seminars are complemented by courses on research methods, statistical analysis as well as course on generic skills development. Courses on "Generic Skills" include seminars on Scientific Writing, Scientific Presentation and Professional (Scientific) Communication. They aim at the training of key competences and are offered in cooperation with the Ruhr-University Bochum Research School. Regular presentation and discussion of individual research projects form part of the semi-annual "Research Colloquium" in which all PhD candidates as well as supervisors take part.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
