The Doctoral Programme aims to train experts with a wide and thorough linguistic-literary, historical-cultural and philosophical-religious education, equipped with skills in critical analysis and knowledge of the proper instruments needed to conduct it, with regard to the geographical and cultural areas of research (Educational Sector Codes).

The different research specializations investigate theoretical and methodological issues in linguistic-literary, historical, philosophical-religious, artistic, anthropological, socio-economic and comparative fields.

The Doctoral Programme focuses on the study of modern languages, cultures and civilizations, on the in-depth analysis of communication between complex cultural systems and on the analysis and interpretation of literary texts in a foreign language, in their being bearers of a unique concentration of meanings and at the same time instrument for grasping cultures and traditions.

The main research topics are as follows:

  • Anglo-American cultures and literatures;
  • English culture and literature;
  • postcolonial English cultures and literatures;
  • French and European francophone culture and literature;
  • Ibero-American cultures and literatures;
  • Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese (Iberian Peninsula) cultures and literatures;
  • Portuguese-speaking cultures and literatures of Latin America and Africa;
  • German and Austrian culture and literature;
  • culture, literature, philology, linguistics, history and thought related to the following linguistic areas: Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech, Croatian, Greek, Polish, Russian, Serb and Slovenian;
  • comparative literatures and intercultural studies;
  • literatures and visual arts.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

  • Italian Second Cycle Degree (‘Laurea Specialistica’ according to Ministerial Decree No 509/1999 or ‘Laurea Magistrale’ according to Ministerial Decree No 270/2004);
  • Italian Degree taken in compliance with the so-called ‘Vecchio Ordinamento’ (before Ministerial Decree No 509/1999);
  • equivalent academic qualification gained abroad, as previously recognised to be suitable.
