The EUI Department of History and Civilization studies European History from the Renaissance to the present day, recognizing that the idea—or ideas—of Europe remains contested, as does the issue of its frontiers over time. The Department is committed to seeing European History in a global perspective, investigating Europe’s history in relation to other regions and cultures of the world. It distinguishes itself as a place where different historiographical and methodological approaches meet, and, while most activities are conducted in English, it encourages multi-lingualism.
Defined by intellectual openness, the Department strongly promotes comparative and transnational studies of cultural and economic trends; the history of social, political and intellectual movements and traditions; and a gender approach to history. It aims to capture the range of contradictions, specificities, continuities and breaches that characterize both Europe’s past and the study of that past, so as to face the most challenging questions of its present.
The Department offers a structured four-year doctoral programme. In the first year doctoral researchers study historiographical and methodological issues and the in-depth exploration of selected central themes of European history.
In the second, third and fourth years, researchers pursue their individual research, and are invited to present the results of their work in seminars and workshops. Professors direct more specialized research seminars, tailored to the needs of researchers.
The Department provides training in research skills, IT and multimedia skills and encourages researchers and fellows to make use of the Language Centre.
Funding is provided for doctoral researchers to go on a mission twice a year to work in archives and libraries. Researchers may also receive financial support to present their work-in-progress at international conferences.
