Location of European University Institute
The Department takes a comparative and contextual approach to the study of European and International law. The Department’s professors hail from many countries and therefore constitute a large corpus of expertise on national legal systems. This facilitates comparative work, as it highlights the fact that different legal systems today cannot be treated as if they existed in a territorially delimited world. As regards context, law is not treated in a purely technical exercise, but is examined as it relates to social, cultural political and economic factors.
The doctoral programme of the Law Department reflects its European and international character and its comparative and contextual approach to research.
International and European Law are the strongest elements in the Department’s programme, which has long offered specializations in Human Rights Protection Law, Social Law, Competition Law, International Economic and Environmental Law, and the impact of globalisation on European and national legal systems and constitutional structures.
Contents
Doctoral researchers are supported by a methodology seminar to help them structure their research, and can choose from a number of advanced courses and doctoral seminars.
Courses and seminars are interactive, research-oriented and designed to cover the main subject areas of the Department’s work. Researchers get experience in presenting their work, and are encouraged to participate in conferences, workshops and the Department's very active Working Groups.
In the first year, new researchers in the doctoral programme follow a series of seminars jointly with those studying for an LL.M.
Researchers are counselled and supervised by a Professor in the Department, and take part in departmental seminars as part of a structured programme in their first and second years, and on a voluntary basis thereafter.
Researchers write a dissertation which is the basis for the conferment of the degree and normally submitted within the fourth year following arrival.
The Department attaches particular importance to linguistic diversity and encourages professors and researchers to express themselves in more than one language during seminars and departmental activities. Submitting papers and theses in languages other than English is encouraged whenever this is desired and when appropriate supervision is available.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

You must meet the minimum degree requirements set by the national grant authorities by the beginning of the academic year for which you have applied. If you are a national of Latin America, you must have graduated at the time of applying.
The annual deadline for applying is 31 January.

- Belgium: maîtrise or master (economics), or licence with distinction
- Cyprus: Ptychion or equivalent degree
- Denmark: kandidateksamen

- Germany: completion of university studies and the qualifications required to study for a doctorate
- Greece: ptychion
- Italy: laurea (vecchio ordinamento); laurea specialistica /Masters (nuovo ordiinamento)
- Netherlands: doctoraal examen or Master's degree
- Norway: Master's degree or Cand.Philol, Cand.Polit, Cand.Oecon., Cand.Sociol., or Cand.Jur.
- Poland: Magister, Magister inzynier lub inny równorzedny
- Portugal: licenciatura and qualifications required to study for a doctorate in Portugal
- Spain: licenciatura
- Sweden: kandidatexamen and the qualifications required to study for a doctorate
- Switzerland: licence/diplôme or master
- UK & Ireland: good honours degree (min. Upper Second); preference to those with a Master's degree
- Latin American countries: licenciatura
- Other countries: diploma equivalent to the minimum qualification needed to study for a doctorate in a given country
Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English.

Funding details
EU Member States
Grants and tuition fees for Ph.D. candidates are covered by the national grant-awarding authority for Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

New EU Member States
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Romania and Slovakia are new EU Members States, but have not yet signed the EUI Convention. Consequently, there are currently no grants available for Ph.D. candidates from these countries.
Candidates from these countries are encouraged to apply. They do not pay the €12,000 yearly tuition fee.
Associate Member States, Norway and Switzerland
Nationals of Norway and Switzerland and may be admitted to the EUI under the Association Agreements.
Grants and tuition fees for doctoral candidates are covered by the national grant-awarding authority.
Turkey
The terms of the grant agreement with the Turkish authorities are currently under revision.
Countries Covered by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs awards grants to candidates from: Croatia, the Russian Federation and the CIS.
Tuition fees are also covered by the Ministry.
Countries Covered by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs awards grants to candidates from Latin American Countries: Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haití, Republica Dominicana, Paraguay, Bolivia, Perú, Ecuador, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Brasil, México, Chile, Venezuela, Panamá, Argentina, Uruguay.
Tuition fees are also covered by the Ministry.
Other Non-EU Countries
Nationals from other non-EU countries not mentioned above may also be admitted to the EUI.
Successful candidates from countries not covered by the above programmes must:
- guarantee they have sufficient funds (minimum € 1,200 a month) to support themselves in Florence during the programme (12 or 48 months)
- pay the EUI tuition fees of € 12,000 a year
The Principal is authorised to reduce or waive fees for candidates from developing countries.
Payment of fees and maintenance grant must be through a national or private grant foundation.
