Location of Oxford Brookes University

The Centre for Health, Medicine and Society Past and Present was established in 1999 to develop research in history of medicine at Oxford Brookes. Initially funded by the School of Humanities, the Centre was awarded group status and interim development funding by the Wellcome Trust in 2001. Funding from a Wellcome Trust Enhancement Award in 2003 and a Strategic Award in 2007, coupled with support from the university, have further expanded the research capacity of the Centre.

The overarching theme of research projects funded by the Strategic Award is ‘Health Care in Public and Private’. The five-year award provides research support for several members of staff, a programme of seminars and conferences, outreach activities and MA bursaries. (From April 2010 to September 2012 the Strategic Award will be held jointly with Professor Steven King – a former Director of the Centre and now at the University of Leicester.)

While the Wellcome Trust has been a generous funder of the Centre in recent years, members of the Centre have also been successful in obtaining funding from other sources, including the AHRC, the Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy.

The Centre’s research interests span from the early modern to the present day and have global coverage.

Some of the Centre’s current projects investigate the history of:

* anatomy and the body
* poverty and welfare
* medical markets and healthcare systems
* child health
* psychiatry
* colonial and post-colonial medicine and indigenous health practices
* Western forensic medicine
* material and visual culture of medicine and science
* drug discovery and the pharmaceutical industry
* eugenics, anthropology, racism and bio-politics
* human experiments under National Socialism

Staff in the Centre are committed to research-led teaching and they offer a variety of history of medicine modules for the History BA and History of Medicine MA, which is an important link between the undergraduate and postgraduate research programmes. Staff can offer MPhil/PhD supervision in a number of research areas.
