The School of Biological Sciences has an established international reputation for both fundamental and applied research. Over 30 academic staff, more than 60 postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers and undergraduate project students are engaged in the research programmes. Our research activities cover a wide range of interests from the molecular level to the environment, reflecting the complexity of the modern biological sciences.
Research projects cover a broad range of topics, both fundamental and applied including: DNA-protein interactions; protein engineering; NMR structure determination of proteins; molecular biophysics; molecular embryology; molecular design and mode of operation of insecticides; phylogenetic studies of marine fungi and marine biology; immunology, infection and immunity; transcription factors and gene expression; developmental biology of vertebrates (Xenopus); microbial decay of materials; environmental monitoring and biotechnology; structure and mechanism of restriction and modification enzymes; molecular biology of cancer; DNA and RNA structure; and chromatin structure.
The course can be studied full-time over three years or part-time over six years.

A good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject or a master's degree in an appropriate subject. Exceptionally, equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications will be considered. All applicants subject to interview.
