Biomedical Ethics and Law/ Medical Track

This is an interdisciplinary program aiming at equipping young scholars with the necessary knowledge and tools to tackle the complex ethical issue that arises in biomedicine.

Biomolecular Structure and Mechanism

The program offers an interdisciplinary educational platform for graduate students that guarantees comprehensive, high-level training in recombinant protein technologies, experimental macromolecular structure determination, and computational biology.

Cancer Biology

The program offers students interested in basic, translational or clinical cancer research multidisciplinary research opportunities in a competitive international setting.

Ecology

The PhD Program in Ecology wants to increase the research competence of PhD students in the interdisciplinary field of ecology and to provide them with useful skills for their professional life inside or outside University.

Evolutionary Biology

The PhD Program in Evolutionary Biology provides PhD students in evolutionary biology with a broad overview of the field, with useful skills for their professional life, whether this be in academia or not, and with networking opportunities with peers and professional academics.

Integrative Molecular Medicine

The comprehensive study of organ functions in health and disease requires multidisciplinary approaches and extensive networking. The PhD program in Integrative Molecular Medicine combines basic and clinical research and offers a broad range of advanced training opportunities.

MD/PhD Program

The MD-PhD program serves as an entry point for medical students and graduates into the Life Science Zurich Graduate School. The essence of the program is to enable medical students and graduates (in addition to their regular degree in human medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine) to gain a basic natural science education which allows them to conduct a regular natural science PhD

Microbiology and Immunology

This PhD program offers a collaborative environment for internationally competitive research in microbiology and immunology. Projects cover virology, basic and environmental microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, infection biology, basic immunology and evolution.

Molecular Life Sciences

The program offers Ph.D. positions and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. in biochemistry, bioinformatics and computational biology, genetics, microbiology, and cell, developmental, molecular, structural and systems biology.

Neuroscience

The program imparts outstanding knowledge in neuroscience to students of diverse disciplines such as biology, medicine, psychology, pharmacology, biochemistry, physics and computer science.

Plant Science

The PSC Ph.D. Program in Plant Sciences allows you to carry out your research in the most challenging areas of plant sciences relating to molecular plant biology, environmental sciences, systematic botany and agronomy. Additionally, you visit a training program including interdisciplinary and offering courses on research skills and transferable skills necessary for a career both in academia and outside academia. A specialized PSC PhD Program in Plant Sciences and Policy is offered within the PhD Program in Plant Sciences for a limited number of Ph.D. students. The program is open to talented young scientists that are motivated to carry out excellent research in plant sciences and to take responsibility at the interface between policy, public and research

Systems Biology

The PhD program Systems Biology offers training in quantitative analysis and predictive mathematical modeling at all levels of biological organization. It provides students with the generic skills for working in the challenging field of systems biology, and in their specific project. We are looking for motivated students from various disciplines (biology, engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science ...), and this breadth is reflected by the participating departments and PIs.

Systems Biology of Complex Diseases

The Ph.D. - Program at the Competence Center for Systems Physiology and Metabolic Diseases integrates Biology, Medicine, Engineering and Computer Sciences and offers ambitious and qualified students research positions, education and training in a challenging new field in life science, that brings the power of Systems Biology to physiology and medicine.

Requirements

The applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent from a university in the field of Natural Sciences. It is also possible to apply when the master's degree is received within six month after the application deadline. In this case please upload a copy of your Bachelor's degree or an academic transcript

The program language is English throughout. Proficiency in English is therefore required. A formal proof of competence in English (IELTS, CPE or TOEFL) is recommended but not mandatory.

Funding details

Research groups within the Life Science Zurich Graduate School provide financial support in accordance with the Ph.D. student salary set by the Swiss National Science Foundation (at present CHF 40’800.- in the 1st year; 43’800.- in the 2nd year; 46’800.- in the 3rd and 4th year). Please note that these are gross amounts from which approx. 15 % will be deducted for social security, taxes, etc., not including the private health insurance which is compulsory (approx. 250.- to 300.-/month depending on the scheme you choose). The income is generous compared to international standards and sufficient to make a decent living in Zurich. Living costs (including accommodation, health insurance, transport, meals) sum up to approx. CHF 2’000 per month.
