The PhD in Social Work is one of our central activities, alongside our research and teaching at qualifying and post-qualifying levels. PhD students come to study at Edinburgh from all over the world, and carry out their fieldwork in Scotland and overseas. They may also be local practitioners and managers who have taken the decision to undertake PhD study, often closely related to their workplace or particular cause for concern.
Our community of graduate students is diverse, encompassing students who may be studying on a full or part-time basis.
The first year of higher degree study is designed to ensure that all research students are given a good grounding in research methods. Students undertake training in a combination of quantitative and qualitative skills and research design. These courses together with a specific social work course (Advanced Issues in Social Work Research) and others selected in relation to the research topic, form the bulk of study. At the end of the first year, students submit a dissertation in the form of an extended research proposal.
Supervisors are central to PhD work. All PhD students in Social Work are supported by two academic supervisors, one of whom may be based in another discipline in the University. To find out more about the research interests of staff members, please consult:
Together with students in all disciplines across the School, social work research students undertake both required and optional research methods courses in first year (and second year if part time) prior to proceeding with their thesis.
Each student has two supervisors with the possibility of the second supervisor from an outside discipline.
There are regular group meetings, especially in year one, between staff and students. These discussions are enriched by the presence of a number of overseas students, while many of our home students are experienced professionals who study part time while working.
