The University of Edinburgh's Institute for the Study of Science, Technology and Innovation (ISSTI) offers a Doctoral Programme in Science and Technology Studies (STS). STS is a rapidly growing field of scholarship which addresses fundamental and urgent questions about the nature of science and technology, their historical development and their pervasive role in modern, social and economic life.

Areas of research interest
* the history and philosophy of science;
* the social shaping of technology;
* the history of medicine, including psychiatry;
* the politics of controversies and public engagement with science and technology;
* science, technology and gender;
* the sociology of financial markets and emissions trading schemes;
* innovation in biotechnology and the life sciences;
* the development and use of information and communication technologies;
* innovation for sustainability.


Contents

Academic expertise in science and technology studies is drawn from across the university to provide training and supervision for our research students. Students take an programme of coursework combining training in research methods with specialist courses that is specific to their needs and submit a full research proposal for examination in thier first year. This is followed by supervised research leading to the production of a PhD thesis. Students who have a solid background in STS may be accepted directly into our PhD programme, however most students will be required to first do a foundational MSc by Research in Science and Technology Studies.
