The doctoral degree programme in Architecture and Planning at the University of Liechtenstein is geared to international standards and criteria. – uniquely integrated in the wider fields of studies the university engages in: International Financial Services, Entrepreneurship and Management and Information and Process Management. The Graduate School prepares the doctoral candidates for a later career in science or for a scientific activity with practical application. It serves as a basis for acquiring expertise in the areas of independent research, presentation and publication.
Doctoral studies must be conducted in one of the following research foci in architecture or planning :
Architectural Design Theory Research into architectural design and its processes; the cognitive construction of design; questions of culture and design; design history and criticism; and social and societal modes of design inquiry.
Sustainable DesignResearch into design, engineering and the evaluation of buildings performance such as energy efficiency; integrated renewable energy; resource, material and mechanical aspects; and systems integration in pursuit of building sustainability by design.
Sustainable Urban Design and PlanningResearch into advanced policy and practice in climate stable design and planning; renewable energy and resource autonomous urban development; water sensitivity and bodiversity in urban design; landscape urbanism and broader regenerative regional change.
The focus on applications in a wider context and real-world relevance of investigations is paramount. Further information is provided on the personal web pages of the professors in relation to these and other research interests they pursue.

The doctoral degree programme leads to the world of research. Research means asking questions to which satisfying answers have not yet been found. With a relevant consecutive Master’s or comparable degree from a university, you have satisfied the necessary prerequisites. The doctoral degree programmes are semi-structured and their contents build upon the Master's degree programmes offered at the Graduate School. Very good academic performance in your first and second degrees consisting of 300 ECTS credits or comparable academic performance is required in order to qualify.
