This programme allows you to combine taught coursework (120 credits) with a full-length doctoral thesis (420 credits). The taught element prepares you to undertake doctoral research by allowing you to design a portfolio of coursework particularly suited to your thesis, thereby offering a flexible and tailored research training programme from which you can build. In consultation with a member of academic staff, you will devise a portfolio of taught coursework that prepares you to undertake an 80,000-word research thesis on a topic of your choice.
Learning and teaching
Taught modules are supported by ongoing research (much of it interdisciplinary) of academic staff in the department, and reflect the historical and cultural emphasis of that research. The range of modules from which taught elements can be selected makes it possible to tailor training to accommodate a variety of student research projects.
Programme content
We advise that students follow two core modules: Research Skills and Performance, Theory and Culture before choosing four other (20 credit) taught modules from either the department (such as Historicising Performance; Guided Reading) or from other master’s level programmes (which could include Gender & Representation; Shakespeare & Performance; or Modernism and the Margins: 1910-1940).
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
