Postgraduate Studies in Politics and Religion at Birmingham combines the unique expertise of the Department of Theology and Religion, one of the largest and most interdisciplinary departments in the United Kingdom. In addition to the departmental specialism, the programme draws on the expertise in this field from the Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS) and the Centre for the Study of Global Ethics (CSGE). A particular strength of the programme is its focus on the role which religion plays in contemporary global politics.
The events following September 11th dramatically highlighted the importance of religion in public life, both in the developed and the developing world. The teaching and research programmes offered by the department of Theology and Religion in this area are specifically designed to meet the needs of those seeking further study in the subject, policy makers and analysts in international relations, security studies specialists, national and regional institutions interested in managing religious diversity, and those working in community development.
The PhD can be taken in three formats:
* As a full-time degree in the U.K.
This course lasts three years, and the requirement is the submission of a thesis not exceeding 80,000 words. This is the ideal option for PhD.
* As a part-time degree in the U.K.
This course last six years, and the requirement is the submission of a thesis not exceeding 80,000 words
* As an external degree
External registration is a possibility for overseas students who are unable to live full time in Birmingham. It lasts between four and six years, depending on individual circumstances.
Ideally we recommend one of the first two options as the best mode of research, but it is possible for those who cannot move to the U.K. to register externally and several current research students have taken this course. Normally, students will be expected to reside in Birmingham for six months (divided up however they wish) during their period of registration. It is also common for a supervisor to visit the externally registered student in their country of residence. It is also essential that externally registered students have access to good library facilities in their location.
The main requirement for PhD students is to attend the regular supervision with their supervisor.
Reasons for Choosing the PhD
You have the necessary basic training, and there is a topic on which you want to write a substantial study.
Supervisors
It is usual to discuss your ideas for a research proposal with your potential supervisor(s) in advance of applying, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Note
While it is important to discuss with your potential supervisor the topic you want to work on in advance, it is not necessary to have fixed it precisely, and it is a very common experience for PhD students to spend quite a few months settling on a final topic. And it may be that some preliminary research will lead you to reformulate your original topic. But it is important to have framed in your mind a place to begin.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testIf you wish, please contact us to discuss your ideas for postgraduate work before making a formal application. If your main interest is in research for a thesis, we will put you in touch with the member(s) of staff who appear best able to supervise such work. In the case of taught Masters courses we will put you in touch with the programme director. However, it is fully acceptable to apply immediately if you are clear as to what you wish to do. We can always get back to you to discuss the application and, if necessary, to arrange an interview. Our concern is to ensure that students apply for the most suitable course of study with the appropriate provision of research materials and teaching. Don’t forget that before you apply you’ll need to pull together your documents for application.
If you are intending to apply for any of the Research Programmes offered by the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion, that is MPhil, MPhilB or PhD, you need to include with your application form a Research Proposal.
