The Department of German Studies at Birmingham enjoys a long-standing national and international reputation. Research is pursued in its broad social and intellectual context, and you are encouraged to select topics that require knowledge of developments elsewhere in Europe. We welcome enrolment directly to the degrees of PhD, MLitt and MPhil. There are excellent library holdings and good facilities for research training.
It is possible to arrange joint supervision involving staff from other departments, especially from the Institute for German Studies, and Modern History. There is a departmental research seminar, at which you will be invited to deliver work-in-progress papers.
