The doctoral program in Design is offered by the INDACO department (Industrial Design, Arts, Communication and Fashion) together with the Mechanics and Chemistry Depts, at the Politecnico di Milano. The Doctoral Programs of Politecnico di Milano aim to develop the professional competence to carry out high level research in manufacturing and service companies, public bodies and universities. This doctoral course refers to the Industrial design scientific field. Others scientific fields explored are Philosophy, Sociology of cultural and communicative process, History of Arts, Drawing, Science and technology of materials, Industrial engineering, Languages theory and computer science.
Objectives of the Doctoral Program
The Doctoral Program in Design forms designer-researchers who, comparing themselves with the problems and the opportunities of the contemporary society, know how to produce an original design knowledge.
The Program develops project and analytical abilities, it proposes different methodologies of research, it promotes the attitude to collaborate and it offers professional opportunities in universities and centres of research, design enterprises and public corporate bodies.
To reach this objective the Doctoral Program is articulated in different Research Units:
* Advanced Design. Envisioning Product and Process Forms (ADD)
* Design and Innovation for Sustainability (DIS)
* Design for Cultural Heritage (DeCH)
* Design of Communication (d.COM)
* Design Representation (D.REP)
* Design Strategy (DeST)
* Fashion & Textile (MODA)
* Industrial Design and Engeenering for Innovation (IDEA)
* Interiors (INT)
* Researches for Ergonomics and Design (RED)
At the end of the cycle the title “Doctoral of Research in Design” is conferred, with the indication of the followed fields of research.
The Program offers common and specialist activities.
* Common activities. They are courses and seminars connected to the discipline of the design and the methodologies and the practices of the research, considered in their whole. Specifically: common activities are proposed to consolidate the cultural and operational substratum transversal to all the Research Units, considering both the cultural side (as for example: the design phenomenology or the epistemology of the research) and operational one (as, for example the tools for the Research and the management of the Research).
* Specialist activities: They are activities of formation proposed and supported by the Research Units in which the Doctoral Program is articulated. They respond to the formative necessities of the research within product design, design and engineering, communication, fashion, interior design, product-service system, cultural heritage.
