Research activity in Hispanic Studies spans medieval to modern, embracing the history, literatures and cultures of Spain and its regions, Catalonia, Galicia, the Hispanic Caribbean and Spanish America, Portugal and Brazil, as well as the disciplines of Linguistics and Translation Studies.
The Department currently has two centres funded by external bodies:
* The Xunta de Galicia supports the Centro de Estudos Galegos to promote the teaching of Galician in the Department, and provides small sums to support research activity in Galician Studies, including the publication of the Galician Review.
* Since 2005 the Portuguese government has sponsored the Cátedra Gil Vicente, a research centre for Lusophone Studies within the Department. The centre funds conferences and training events organised or attended by academic staff, language instructors and postgraduate students. It also offers partial bursaries to fund postgraduate students.

To gain admission to a research degree programme (with the exception of the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine (MD)) an applicant must comply with the following entry requirements:
* Attainment of an Honours degree (normally a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree or equivalent) in a relevant subject awarded by an approved university, or
* Attainment of an alternative qualification or qualifications and/or evidence of experience judged by the University as indicative of an applicant’s potential for research and as satisfactory for the purpose of entry to a research degree programme.
In addition:
* Admission and registration for a research degree programme may be conditional on satisfactory completion of preliminary study, which may include assessment.
* In some cases you will also need to have completed a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject.
