There are ten full-time academic staff in the field of Medieval History at the University, covering a varied range of aspects of British and continental European history from the fall of the Roman Empire to around 1500. Current research interests extend to areas of cultural and social history, political development, and economic and religious history, in both Britain and continental Europe. Moreover, medieval historians in other departments in the University expand the range of courses on offer, notably in the field of Byzantine history.
Research degrees are best planned by individual discussion. In line with the AHRC’s '1+3' model for research degrees, postgraduates are expected to register initially for an MPhil (B) degree. This combines a 20,000-word thesis on a specific research topic with taught courses. You may register for an MPhil research degree, which is examined by thesis alone. The thesis can be a maximum of 40,000 words. A PhD thesis is 80,000 words.
Key facts Type of Course: Doctoral research
Duration: PhD – 3 years full-time, 6 years part-time; MPhil – 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time
