The PhD Economic and Social History was established by the Technical University of Lisbon in 1991 and adapted to European Higher Education Area in 2009. This 3rd cycle course aims to provide high quality academic training in economic history and produce original research in this field.
The course aims to prepare professionals with high capacity of interpretation and response to economic and social changes in the long run and to the interaction between chronological, geographical and social aspects of those changes.

1- Where is the course taught?
In Lisbon, at the School of Economics and Management (ISEG), one of the seven autonomous institutes making up the Technical University of Lisbon.
ISEG is an institute that undertakes teaching and research, whose mission is to contribute to pushing the boundaries of knowledge in the areas of economics, finance and business. ISEG also seeks to contribute to the economic and social development of Portugal and establish its international presence by means of teaching and research, providing the community with services and fostering scientific and inter-cultural exchange among students, teaching faculty and researchers.
Founded in 1911, ISEG currently offers 5 undergraduate degree courses, 23 masters programs and 6 doctoral programs in addition to an MBA, a wide range of postgraduate courses not leading to a degree, and courses for executives. Post-graduate studies play a major role: about 40% of ISEG’s 4000 students are enrolled in post-graduate courses (doctorate or masters programs or post-graduate diplomas).
150 of ISEG’s teaching staff hold PhDs and most are active members of ISEG’s research centers, which have been evaluated as very good or excellent by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Research is undertaken in the scientific areas of economics, management, mathematics applied to economics and management, economic and social history, economic and organizational sociology, and law.

2- How can I apply for the PhD Economics and Social History?
Applications for the PhD Economic and Social History are made online on the ISEG website. Applicants must provide proof that they meet the admission requirements.
They should also attach a research proposal for their doctoral dissertation project. Acceptance of an applicant is dependent on the assessment of their academic and professional experience and approval of the research proposal. Accepted applicants will be assigned a supervisor and be integrated into one of the hosting research centers.

3- When and how do I apply?
The application deadline for the first phase is 10 May.
Application is made online on the ISEG website, where all details of the necessary information and documents to submit for entry to the program are given. Applicants will be informed of the success of their applications by 17 May. Applicants who are accepted in the first phase should officially register for the program by 27 May.
The application deadline for the second phase is 14 July, and applicants will be notified of the success of their applications by 19 July.
Applicants admitted in the second phase should officially register for the program by 30 July.
Applicants admitted in the first and second phases should enroll between 1 and 15 September.
There may be a third application phase from 1 to 15 September. In this case applicants will be informed about the success of their applications by 17 September, and both registration in the program and enrolment in classes will be between 20 and 24 September.

4- Scholarships and grants
Once registered in the program, an applicant may apply, in a compatible opening phase, to the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) for a study grant.

How is the course structured?
The PhD Economic and Social History is a three-year program in which students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS (credits), corresponding to a three years full time work. It comprises:
- Taught course units, 60 ECTS;
- Preparation, submission and defence of thesis, 120 ECTS.
Course units are taught in the first year of the program over 2 semesters. They are:
- Research Methods (1st semester), 10 ECTS;
- Research Seminar I (1st semester), 10 ECTS;
- Elective course unit (1st semester), 10 ECTS;
- Elective course units (2nd semester), 20 ECTS;
- Research Seminar II (2nd semester), 10 ECTS.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Anyone interested in obtaining advanced academic training and doing research with a view to working in jobs related to international and national development in the public sector, the private sector, or the non-profit sector. PhD graduation will enable students to work in teaching and research posts, managerial and executive positions in international and national organizations, consultancy, training, research projects, journalism, planning, development projects, public policy planning and assessment, and social projects and policy.

2- Who can apply?
Anyone holding a masters degree in the areas of economics, management and finance, as well as history, and anyone showing capabilities to accomplish the program. Students who obtained a GPA of 16 or more (out of 20) or, in special circumstances, students whose GPA is lower than 16 but have demonstrated appropriate scientific preparation or professional experience may also apply.

3- What criteria are used to select candidates?
The Scientific Committee for the doctorate program will choose candidates on the basis of the following criteria:
- Masters degree and its final grade
- First cycle (undergraduate) degree, (GPA) and its final grade
- Academic and relevant professional experience
- Research proposal
