Our research is characterised by a critical cultural studies approach, with PhD supervision normally available in the following research areas:

Media studies; cultural identities - media, national, ethnic, sexed and gendered identities (Professor D Chambers, Dr C Haywood, Dr L Popoviciu, Dr C Pedwell, Dr D McNeil).

Media and cultural theory ( Dr C Haywood, Dr L Popoviciu).

Gender, sexuality, media and culture (Professor D Chambers, Dr C Haywood, Dr C Pedwell).

Journalism and news studies (Professor D Chambers, Mr D Baines, Dr J E Richardson).

Critical discourse studies (Dr J E Richardson).

Contents

PhD research is supported by intensive subject-specific supervision, training in research methodologies and core skills, and opportunities to participate in research seminars and masterclasses. In addition, our Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate School organises a comprehensive training programme for PhD students that covers research techniques and professional/key skills, and provides support for personal development.

Requirements

Normally at least an upper-second-class (2.1) Honours degree, or equivalent, in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Applications from international students or from candidates with work experience and other qualifications, in addition to formal academic qualifications, are also particularly welcome. Applicants whose first language is not English should have a minimum of IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.
