We supervise PhD students whose interests match the expertise we have in our main research areas.
Our biodiversity and conservation group investigates the ecology and evolution of organisms in their natural environment to inform land management practices and environmental policy decision-making across a range of environmental issues
Our agri-environment group undertakes research in plant and insect physiology; biochemistry; and molecular biology in relation to sustainable agriculture and the environment. Current research projects include: mathematical modelling to predict the impact of changes in the agri-environment; molecular techniques to develop crop resistance to pests and diseases; and mechanisms of plant adaptation to drought, salinity and atmospheric pollutants.
Our microbiology group investigates processes of commercial and environmental importance including: natural products discovery; biofuel production; creation of novel antimicrobials; bioremediation of polluted environments; and host-pathogen interactions in a range of diseases including those in plants and coral reef environments.
For more information about staff specialisms please see the School's website. Applicants can put forward their own research proposal, or alternatively they can follow one of the projects suggested on the School website.
The School of Biology has good contacts with industry and host seminars and workshops, some of which are attended by visiting professors from industry. Students have the opportunity to participate at national and international conferences and to supplement their income by undertaking undergraduate laboratory demonstrating.
Our Science, Agriculture and Engineering Graduate School provides training in professional/key skills and research techniques, supports personal development, hosts postgraduate events and has links with several specialist graduate training networks.
