It consists of taught modules that cover professional training and subject knowledge (200 credits), research training and the supervised writing of the research thesis. Full-time students follow the schedule outlined below. Part-time students undertake the same studies but over a longer time frame. Please note that the modules may change from year to year.
Compulsory modules in Year 1 typically include: research training modules (20 credits); English sentence structure (10 credits); and phonetics and phonology (10 credits). More advanced modules in syntax and phonology are available for those with a background in linguistics. You also choose from a selection of modules that cover different aspects of syntax, phonology, semantics, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, computational linguistics and evolutionary linguistics.
In Year 2 you take further modules (60 credits) from the range of linguistics and English modules available in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics. With the Degree Programme Director’s approval, you may also select some modules offered by other Schools at the University. The linguistics/English language project (40 credits) enables you to undertake research in a chosen topic leading to a 10,000-word essay.
Years 3 and 4 are devoted to the thesis itself. You are assigned a supervisor, with whom you have regular consultations and who guides and advises you as you write your PhD thesis (approximately 50,000 words).
