Supported by EPSRC and Rolls-Royce plc a studentship up to £17,000 p.a. for 3 years plus fees* is available
Cranfield University, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc, has an exciting research opportunity that aims to develop a knowledge-based approach to optimise the repair technology/process selection for aero engine damage and a repair knowledge model to support efficient knowledge share in aero engine design.
Rolls-Royce plc has been transforming from a traditional aero engine manufacturer to aero engine-service provider. Through-life Engineering Services are increasingly important elements of service-based contracts for aero engines. The service element involves a considerable amount of repair/remanufacturing work for engine components during their life cycle.
The Repair Team at Rolls-Royce is committed to identifying optimum repair/remanufacturing technologies and processes, and feeding them to the design engineers for supporting life cycle design of aero engine. This project will develop a knowledge-based approach to optimise the repair technology/process selection for aero engine damage and a repair knowledge model to support efficient knowledge share in aero engine design. More specifically it will include performance and cost modelling, and multi-objective decision making in developing the optimisation approach; and also the modelling of repair technology solutions against aero engine damage classification, and integration of the repair knowledge model into aero engine design process using a semi-automatic approach. Visual demonstrators will be developed to prove the efficient share of repair knowledge in aero engine design process.
This project will be associated with the research work within EPSRC Through-life Engineering Services Centre based in Cranfield University, including the usage of lab facilities in the Centre. The successful candidate will be based at the University campus in Bedfordshire and will also spend some time in Rolls-Royce (Derby) as required.

Doctoral Training Centres
This higher research degree is associated with one of our Doctoral Training Centre, which is funded in part by the Research Councils and industry. A generic core skills training programme is provided for all research students. This is structured as a series of half day or full day events and acts as a social and networking forum to foster and develop Cranfield’s research student community.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
