Our research group undertakes analysis-based research in a range of fields as diverse as environmental samples (e.g. ground water, soil); human and animal hair, including feathers; archaeological artefacts; drugs and other toxins; and glass and other materials of forensic interest.
Career development and training
A full range of personal and career-specific training is a compulsory component of all our research degree programmes.
You will be allocated a director of studies and at least one other supervisor during your research degree. Supervisory teams may include appropriately qualified individuals from other universities, industrial practitioners and so on.
Facilities
Our Department of Life Sciences has a full range of modern and up-to-date analytical equipment. It includes advanced optical and electron microscopes, IR, Raman and X-ray spectrometers, GC-MS, GC, ion chromatography, HPLC, AAS, ICP-OES and XRD. A new stable isotope facility has also recently been completed.

Candidates are normally expected to hold a 2.1 minimum degree in a relevant subject. An MSc in a relevant subject preferred. Equivalent experiential qualifications can be considered.
