Fundamental research in pure and applied sciences is a driving force for innovation and it encourages curiosity. [...] No country can excel in fundamental research on its own - it requires collaboration between universities and research centers in the north and in the south, and in almost all cases fundamental research is undertaken by teams of international scientists and engineers.1

The ALGANT-DOC doctoral programme, set up by the ALGANT consortium that now consists of eight universities on four continents, namely the universities of Bordeaux (France), Chennai (India), Leiden (Netherlands), Milano (Italy), Concordia (Montréal, Canada), Padova (Italy), Paris-Sud (France) and Stellenbosch (South Africa). The ALGANT-DOC doctoral programme is a collaborative scheme creating ideal conditions for the production of high level research in pure mathematics, leading to a double and/or joint doctor degree, prepared under joint supervision at a minimum of two partner institutions. With ALGANT-DOC, the doctoral candidates will acquire the expertise and skills needed to pursue a career at the highest academic level.

ALGANT-DOC is among the 13 joint doctoral programmes, which have been selected in 2009 by the European Commission (out of 135 applications), in the frame of the second phase of the Erasmus Mundus programme.

This recognition allows us to offer 6 fellowships for Category A and 4 for Category B ALGANT Joint Doctorate candidates.

The consortium publishes research projects suggestions, to be carried out at least at two partner universities. Candidates may also, submit their own research project proposal, but must make contact with potential supervisors before applying to the programme.

Those interested to participate in ALGANT-DOC are requested to wait for the next pre-application and application rounds, which will be announced after September 2011.

Sixteen ALGANT Ph.D. Projects are currently in course.

Faculty

Université Bordeaux 1 (UB1) specializes in the fields of Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Chemistry and the Life Sciences. UB1 is ranked top in its fields of expertise. It offers 160 curricula leading to national degrees framed according to the Bologna process, which are attended by 6.100 bachelor students, 2.300 master students and 860 doctorate students. Its cutting-edge research activities are carried out in 35 research departments, almost all of which working in close association with research performing organisations such as CNRS, INRA, INRIA. 1.000 permanent researchers along with 1.000 administrative and technical staff contribute to build UB1’s international reputation for excellence. UB1 maintains close ties with its social environment not only through professional curricula but also thanks to long-term private sector partnerships.

Over the past 15 years, UB1 has been actively contributing to the strengthening of the European Higher Education and Research Areas. It hosts more than 1.300 foreign students and it has created an extensive network comprising more than 200 partner universities all over the world. UB1 has gained a strong experience in:

  • coordinating research networks, such as the 2 Networks of Excellence FAME and Interop, each endowed with 6.5 Million €;
  • developing joint curricula, such as the ALGANT Erasmus Mundus Master Course and the MiLMI UEUS Atlantis Master, both of which it coordinates.

Moreover it is an active partner in a number of networks and currently in two Research Training Networks, 7 ECW programmes, and 2 Tempus projects (see also B3). As a result, UB1 has in-depth knowledge of recognition mechanisms and keeps advancing, e.g. by being part of joint degree management JOIMAN project’s taskforce. UB1 organizes joint doctorate supervision as co-tutelles with over 30 countries and currently 99 students are conducting doctoral work in this international frame.

Bordeaux 1 is the coordinator of the ALGANT programme. The ALGANT Secretariat is centralized at Bordeaux and the web server hosting the ALGANT information system, web site and e-registration software is also maintained in Bordeaux.
