Contents

Doctoral studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences are primarily research-based. However, students are also expected to attend a certain number of graduate seminars and lectures (the exact number depends on the subject), so it is not possible for students to complete their doctorate by research alone. Advanced full-time students are also expected to participate in undergraduate courses as lecturers.

Students are assigned a thesis supervisor who guides their research, and advises them on the structure of their thesis during their write-up. At the end of their studies students take an oral exam and defend their thesis before a panel of academics.

Although it is usually possible to write your doctoral thesis in English or German, Czech remains the official language of instruction for most classes held by at the Faculty, and not all departments are able to offer graduate classes in another language. We therefore advise any applicants who are concerned about this issue to contact their prospective department to find out the precise situation that applies to their particular field of study.

Period of study. Doctoral studies may be conducted either full-time or part-time. Full-time study ("internal" study) usually takes four years. Part-time study ("external" study) usually takes five years. Internal students who do not complete their thesis within the specified three years are usually allowed to continue their studies as external students, if they wish. External studies can usually be extended up to a maximum of eight years.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Faculty

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) was created in 1990 and it is the second youngest faculty of Charles University in Prague. The Faculty’s mission – as stated in its statute – is the propagation of learning and the protection of knowledge, the cultivation of free thought, independent academic research and original artistic creation and the support, in every way, of the creative spirit of human society. Its main goal is to develop teaching and research in those aspects of the social sciences, which (directly or indirectly) relate to the public administration, or to the economic and cultural life of society.

Today the Faculty has more than 3000 full-time students, plus a floating population of about 300 visiting students per year. In addition, FSS continues to enrol a number of foreign nationals in our full-time degree programmes, both Czech and English.

Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences are intended primarily to prepare students for a professional career in private sector, public administration, national governments, European institutions, academic research or the media. They are divided into three self-contained cycles:

  • A bachelor degree cycle (usually 3 years), which leads to a Bachelor degree (Bc.)

  • A master's degree cycle (usually an additional 2 years), which leads to a Master's degree (Mgr.)

  • Doctoral studies (usually 4 years), which lead to the awarding of a Doctorate (Ph.D).
