Ph.D. studies are designed on the one hand to provide a strong grounding in highly
specialized areas of modern physics and on the other hand to give students the
opportunity to develop interdisciplinary skills. All of this is provided by a series of postgraduate
courses and frequent seminars in the interdisciplinary environment of the
Institute of Physics. By active participation in the group seminars the Ph.D. students
can learn the art of scientific presentation. They can choose a supervisor from many
senior staff scientists and are fully integrated in the research program of the Institute.
Ph.D. students have been co-authors of approx. 30% of the recent journal papers
published by the academic staff of the Institute. The research covers a broad range of
currently developed areas in: condensed matter physics (experimental and
theoretical), molecular physics, nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, statistical
physics, astrophysics and cosmology, medical physics, physics of nano- and
mesoscopic systems, computer physics. The dissertation for the degree of Ph.D. shall
normally be completed and defended within 4 years.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
