We are a leading centre for world class education with extensive expertise in postgraduate programmes. Our research graduates add significant value to global companies through major innovations, with many now holding Board level positions.
Our new International Doctorate Centre builds on this pedigree by delivering a revolutionary new doctorate for the 21st century. It will address industrially challenging issues that will enable companies to develop and implement innovative and world leading sustainable research solutions.
Our International Doctorate is a four year programme that combines industry relevant research, taught courses, international visits, entrepreneurial flair and networking.
Driven by research teams that combine industrial and academic experience, we work with entrepreneurial leaders who understand and appreciate that global environments are constantly changing. Companies need an understanding of the strategic and commercial benefits of moving into a low-carbon economy.
Our vision is to create a future generation of manufacturing leaders with the high-level know-how and research experience that is essential to compete in a global environment defined by high impact and low carbon. They will be adept at working in multi-disciplinary teams and exceptionally well networked internationally, with demonstrable entrepreneurial flair. Sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), our centre is at the forefront of actions to help ensure that the UK maintains a strong global position in manufacturing through more successful innovation, adoption and exploitation of low carbon technologies.
As a Research Entrepreneur you will benefit from a rich blended learning experience enabling you to excel in leading positions within industry. With the support of your sponsoring company you will gain an understanding of academic, business, cultural, and environmental issues in global manufacturing nations.
You will gain:
Engineering Doctorate (International)
MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Research
Your research starts from day one and will be focused on real opportunities and problems in your sponsoring company. Your role will be to deliver research excellence and implement innovations. You will be required to develop a minimum of one submission or major report into your research portfolio per annum. You will also be required to develop and present a minimum of one paper at a leading international conference.
Your individual research project will be in the areas of Digital Technologies, Materials and Manufacturing.
En-route to the International Doctorate, you will undertake an MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This will involve group projects delivering real-world solutions, a series of focused modules, and commercialisation workshops where you will understand the challenges of successfully commercialising research and development.
To understand the global manufacturing environment your international placement will enable you to develop research collaborations with key individuals in policy making, funding organisations, companies and intermediate institutes.
Entrepreneurship
In order to become a leader in industry, it is important that you have the knowledge, skills, and networks to compete in the global market. To achieve this, you will take part in a variety of debates, seminars, networking, social and organisational activities.
Through our strong established links we will give you the opportunity to connect with senior industrialists, policy makers and opinion formers, to embed yourself in key networks.
Entrepreneurship is the practice of seizing new business and organisation opportunities. New business success requires a rare combination of innovation, technical skills and entrepreneurial drive and know-how. You will be working with entrepreneurs and early-stage investors to understand what business experience is required in order to create an effective business model. You will learn the challenges of commercialisation, enabling you to develop innovative ideas.
You will be required, in teams, to organise your own conference including topic, speakers, venue, sponsors and promotion. This will develop your skills in team work, negotiation, organisation and marketing.
Competencies
In addition to the significant focused research outputs, you will develop key competencies that will provide vital benefits in your role as a manufacturing leader:
Appreciation of industry and business culture
Application of knowledge and skills to new situations
Ability to search relevant information sources
Optimal solutions to complex problems
