The Ph.D. program in Computer Scienced is a research based program for students that wish to lead research and development efforts, work in an academic setting on teaching and research, or lead the high-technology industry of the future. The goal of the study is to give students the training and knowledge needed for leadership in research and development, both in academia and industry. The study program is therefore very demanding, yet at the same time both giving and exciting.
The program is run in collaboration with universities and research institutes abroad, and students are required to spend a part of their study period abroad.
Joint Doctoral Programme with KTH - The Royal Institue of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden)
The School of Computer Science (RU) and Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) have signed a Double Doctorate Cooperation Agreement allowing Ph.D. students to be admitted to a joint doctoral programme. Students entering the programme will, upon successful fulfillment of all requirements for graduation at each university, be granted a double doctorate—the official Ph.D. degree certificates of comparable academic levels from both universities.
Contents
The Ph.D. programme at the School of Computer Science is designed to be both flexible and diverse. It is divided into three phases.
* In the first phase, students must ensure a broad background in Computer Science as a whole, and in their research area in particular (see breadth requirements here below).
* In the next phase, students must prepare and defend a proposal for a research plan (thesis proposal defense), that will create the new knowledge and extend the state-of-the-art in that area. This is typically done within one year of entry.
* The last phase then consists of following that research plan, and writing and defending the Ph.D. thesis.
Students in the programme are expected to take part in knowledge dissemination activities by engaging in e.g. teaching, seminars and by publishing.
The programme is structured such that it (typically) takes 3-4 years to finish. Students must finish 180 ECTS to graduate. Students are expected to spend half to one year abroad working on their research at one of our many collaborating universities and research institutions

Requirements
The School of Computer welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates. Applicants should at minimum have completed an M.Sc. degree in Computer Science, or a related area, before entering the program. In the M.Sc. program, the applicant must have demonstrated strong potential for further graduate studies.
Applications may be submitted at any time, although the School of Computer Science may post an advertisement for Ph.D. positions with a specific application deadline.
