Students of the Doctoral Programme in Computational Sciences are researchers in engineering sciences and fields of basic research supporting engineering sciences, and they complete a Doctor of Science in Technology, D.Sc. (Tech.), or a Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, degree. The focus of the programme is mainly on basic research. It is oriented towards developing and applying new methods and tools. It offers technological and scientific know-how, and methodical and computational basis to solve problems in science and technology, and to mathematically and statistically model economic phenomena, among other, using demanding computational methods. The central fields of education are energy technology, and developing and applying basic research and computational methods.
The aim of the programme is to train experts and doctors in technology and philosophy, capable of independent research, for work in the academic community, industry, business life and public administration.
The contents of the programme are organised by the units of Mathematics and Statistics, Electrical Engineering and Technology, and Computer Science.
The most important part of the education is a doctoral thesis that is written under the supervision of a research group, and which is supported by scientific post-graduate and research courses and seminars in order to complete the degree in four years, as a rule. The research groups also manage projects together with the industry and several national and international universities, institutions of higher education, and research institutions.
The fields of research groups are information networks and modelling of information, quality of wireless communication services, radio resources control, optimization with genetic algorithms, decentralized production of electric energy, distribution and consumption of electricity, energy technical properties of bio oils, optimization of fuel injection for bio fuels, and mathematical and statistical modelling of economic and technological phenomena.
A doctorate degree consists of 60 ECTS of studies and doctoral thesis which is written under the supervision of a research group. The doctoral thesis is supported by scientific post-graduate and research courses and seminars. The degree can be completed in four years.
