The programme comprises academic teaching, self study, placements and research. The academic teaching is run jointly by the University and NHS-based staff and covers psychological principles and their application. Topics include: assessment and formulation of clinical difficulties; core psychotherapeutic models and skills; teaching and training; research and evaluation methods; long-term models of care; managerial and professional issues; criminological and legal psychology; professional development; lifespan development; and consultancy and teamwork.
Close links with the region’s clinical psychologists enable a wide selection of placements to be offered, covering work with adults, children, people with learning disabilities and older adults. Trainees must be prepared to travel throughout the region.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry is open to graduates holding a good Honours degree in psychology or an equivalent qualification (which must confer eligibility for Graduate Basis for Registration of the British Psychological Society) plus a minimum of six months’ relevant work experience. Applicants whose first language is not English must have IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of IELTS 7.0 for speaking and listening, IELTS 8.0 for academic reading, and IELTS 6.0 for academic writing. We are not in a position to offer places to international candidates who require a work permit, or who will be returning home to practise.
Our INTO Newcastle University Centre can provide extra tuition to help you meet the University's English language requirements.
