The International PhD program of the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin offers 20 PhD Positions. The MDC currently hosts more than 50 research groups and 250 doctorate students working in the fields of Molecular Biology, Cardiovascular & metabolic Research, Cancer biology, Developmental Biology, Medical Systems Biology, Structural Biology and Neurobiology.

On joining the Helmholtz Graduate School for Molecular Cell Biology at the MDC, PhD students receive interdisciplinary training in Molecular Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine and may join the special research schools in `Molecular Neurobiology´ (MolNeuro) or `Translational Cardiovascular Medicine´ (TransCard). All PhD students enjoy support such as travel grants for conferences and external courses, participation in summer schools, annual PhD retreats and social activities. The Graduate School of the MDC works in close collaboration with Berlin universities, the Freie Universität Berlin und Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

This is a unique opportunity to develop your research career at the interface of basic molecular biology and translational medicine. library

The library is a specialized science library serving the staff of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine. It collects, catalogues, and provides literature for the entire MDC community. The literature in the library is oriented towards the areas of research that are dealt with at the MDC. Special emphasis of the collection is therefore placed on the literature of Molecular Medicine, and in accordance with particular research activities of the institution, also covers Medical Genetics, Cell Biology, Hypertension, Cardiology, Oncology, and Neuroscience.

BBB

The MDC supports the transfer of know-how from the laboratory bench and the clinic to the production line. In 1995, it founded a company, the BBB Management GmbH Campus Berlin-Buch. Associates are the Berlin-based Schering AG and the FMP Research Institute. The task of the BBB Management GmbH is to develop and run a biotechnology park in Berlin-Buch and, to this end, it has built a biotechnology and business development center to house start-up companies. Funding for this center comes from the Mutual Mission for the Improvement of Regional Economics (GA, Gemeinschaftsaufgabe zur Verbesserung der regionalen Wirtschaftsstruktur) and from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE, Europäischer Fonds für Regionalentwicklung). To date, around 30 biotech enterprises with more than 500 employees are situated on the Berlin-Buch Campus. The expertise and services they offer range from the development of bio-diagnostics and vectors for gene therapy to peptide synthesis, protein analysis, cell- and tissue grafts, bioinformatics, and genetics.

Life Science Learning Laboratory

The future of molecular medicine depends not only on the progress of research and its impact on clinical practice. It is also determined by the attitude of the general public and its encouragement of modern biomedicine and genetics. The MDC has taken steps to ensure that patients and members of the public are kept informed of the latest developments.

The BBB Management GmbH has established a Life Science Learning Laboratory where every day pupils, their teachers, and other groups can learn about the basics of genetics, genetic engineering, and genome research.

Student Life

Living in Berlin

The city of Berlin has a population of 3,4 million people and is the capital of Germany. The Campus Berlin-Buch, where the MDC is located, is situated in a suburb at the north-eastern border of Berlin. It is a historic research campus from the beginning of the 20th century. In the late 1920s the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Brain Research was established in Berlin-Buch, as one of the first of its kind. Over the years various other research institutions were established on the Campus Berlin-Buch, currently hosting the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC), the Leibniz Institute for molecular pharmacology (FMP), the Experimental and Clinical Research Center (ECRC), the Helios Clinic and several Biotech companies. The MDC was founded in 1992 to combine basic and clinical research in the areas of oncology, cardiovascular disease and neurobiology. You can reach the MDC in 25 minutes from the city centre by S-Bahn (S2-trains run every 10min from the city centre, such as Potsdamer Platz. For more information about public transport in Berlin havea look at the website of the BVG).
