The University of Vaasa occupies a modern and beautiful campus area by the sea in Palosaari, an area about 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of Vaasa. The modern Finnish architecture along with the old buildings creates an inspiring milieu for studies and research. Two of the faculties are situated in a former Cotton Mill, Fabriikki, which has been skilfully renovated to accommodate the academic departments. The main university building Tervahovi and the administrative building Luotsi were completed in the autumn of 1994, and they accommodate several departments and support services of the university. Students and researchers have also access to the high-quality teaching and research laboratory Technobothnia, and to the academic library Tritonia offering diverse library services to various higher-education institutions in Vaasa.

The University offers the students a modern and safe study environment with up-to-date computer rooms and other facilities. A magnificent view of the surrounding natural scenery and the sea opens up from the main student restaurant on campus. There are several restaurants and cafeterias on campus serving the students and staff. When possible, arrangements have been made to facilitate the movement of physically handicapped staff and students on campus.

INDIVIDUALISED GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT FOR ALL STUDENTS

Students receive guidance and support from the university throughout their studies. Support is given both on academic and other matters. Before the students arrive in the university, a tutor is appointed to international students. Tutors are fellow students who help the international students to adjust to the Finnish society and the academic environment. Tutors organise a pick-up service from the Vaasa airport, railway station or bus station, take the students to the University for registration, and introduce the University campus to the new students. Tutors also help students with practical matters, such as opening up a bank account, rental agreement, grocery shopping and other matters related to living in Vaasa and Finland. Tutors are there to help you, what ever questions you may have.

Student Life

Vaasa is the third biggest city in the province of Western Finland. Vaasa has about 58,000 inhabitants of whom 72 per cent are Finnish-speaking and 27 per cent Swedish speaking. With its 12 000 students, Vaasa is also a very lively student city and offers lots of activities for its inhabitants.

Vaasa is a seaside city. Its position at the narrowest point of the Gulf of Bothnia makes it an important link between Finland and Sweden. Vaasa is also a distinctively international city: in number of foreigners per capita, Vaasa is second only to the capital Helsinki. The Vaasa archipelago is famous for its abundant plant and animal life. Furthermore, the linguistic and ethnic composition emphasises the Nordic character of the city.

The cultural life of the city is lively. The Finnish Vaasa Town Theatre, the Swedish Wasa Theatre, and the City Orchestra, the Vaasa Opera Company, and numerous other musical groups, choirs and theatres, as well as the several art collections and museums ensure a bustling cultural life for the City.

In recent years, Vaasa has also developed into a popular tourist centre and attracts an increasing number of tourists from far and near to the sunniest city in Finland. In addition to the cultural life, Vaasa’s beautiful surroundings and nature call those interested in outdoor activities. You’ll discover Finland’s fantastic nature and the UNESCO world natural heritage, the Kvarken Archipelago, in Vaasa.

Students may join the activities available to everybody in the city, or take part in the numerous activities for students organised by the student union. VYY, the student union of the University of Vaasa, with its committees and clubs, offers students a great deal of activities, such as parties, social evenings, visits to cultural events, various forms of physical recreation, and a lot more. All international students are invited not only to join the Degree Student Club (club for international degree students) and ESN Club (Erasmus Student Network, club for international exchange students), but also all the other clubs and associations hosted by the student union.
