The PhD in Law of Business and Commerce at Università Bocconi is highly innovative, methodologically rigorous but provides for flexible curricula. The course is structured around the law governing the modern corporation and its relationships with its different constituencies, combining an interdisciplinary approach, an international vision and specialization in the single areas of legal research.
The main topics covered are: corporate and securities law, antitrust, white-collar crimes, employment law, corporate litigation and bankruptcy. There is also the possibility to carry out additional seminars on empirical research for legal studies, law and economics, comparative business law, legal interpretation and business law history.

The Program
The program lasts three years and students are required to attend courses.
The structure of the program is very flexible in order to allow each student to choose a teaching program according to his needs. Each PhD student is assigned a tutor who helps each student's studies and research in their chosen area.
During the three years, teaching activity is structured to allow students to carry out individual research and seminars by leading international visiting professors are also a main part of the program.
First Year
The first year is dedicated to law courses - for a total of 160 hours - and is aimed at providing students with a solid base in fundamental subjects. The following courses are offered: Teoria e tecnica dell'interpretazione giuridica; Analisi economica: corporate and securities law; Ricerca empirica per le scienze giuridiche; Diritto dell'impresa societaria: finanziamento e organizzazione I e II; Storia del diritto dell'impresa e delle società; Diritto comparato dell'impresa e delle società.
Second Year
During the second year, students can elect one field among:
- Corporate law and securities regulation
- antitrust
- white collar crime
- employment law
- corporate litigation and bankruptcy
Within each field the student can design his or her own curriculum together with their assigned tutor, also including a number of courses in economics, finance and accounting offered by Bocconi's Graduate and PhD Schools.
Third Year
The third year is dedicated to the completion of the Dissertation (which can be written either in Italian or English), whose topic is defined in the first year. In this year it is possible to undertake a period of study abroad at leading academic and research institutions in Europe and in the United States. It is possible for students to go abroad during the second semestre of the second year, upon approval of the PhD coordinator.
Job Market and Placement
The PhD program is designed to prepare and foster an academic career, in Italy or on the international job market. Other career opportunities include national and international organizations, regulatory agencies, and the practise of law. In the last few years PhDs and PhD candidates have joined Italian and foreign universities and Law Schools, institutions such as the Italian Stock Exchange Commission (Consob), have become judges or have joined leading international law firms. The tutors and the Career Service of Università Bocconi are available to assist candidates in their job search.
