The Nursing Studies division of the University of Edinburgh has an outstanding record of postgraduate students making significant contribution to the knowledge and evidence base in nursing. The programme also has a strong tradition of welcoming students from home and overseas.

Main areas of research activity and development in Nursing Studies currently relate to the themes of experience of health and illness and organisation and policy for person-centred care.

We offer doctoral supervision in a number of subject areas relating to Nursing studies. The research interests of the Nursing Studies team are detailed on within the research area of this website:

Programme structure

Normal progression for PhD/MPhil in nursing involves spending the first year:

* preparing for the main research work
* taking relevant research training courses
* reviewing relevant literature
* developing the full research proposal

Progression to year two of the programme is dependent on satisfactory outcome from a review board for the programme.

As a model of work, the second year is spent doing the body of the research, usually empirical data collection and analysis, and the third year is spent completing the analysis and writing the thesis.

A student pursuing a PhD/MPhil in Nursing Studies will be able to attend a wide range of postgraduate seminar courses from across the College of Humanities and Social Science.

There is the opportunity to attend other courses in Nursing Studies as well courses provided by other areas of the School of Health in Social Science and related disciplines within the University.

Entrance requirements
* Normally, a masters level degree in the subject is required.
* You should have an aptitude for sustained supervised research.

English Language Requirements

IELTS band: 6.5
TOEFL paper-based test score : 580
TOEFL iBT® test: 92

IMPORTANT NOTE: Per 6 April 2015 only the English language tests from IELTS and Trinity College London are accepted for Tier 4 Visa applications to the United Kingdom. Other tests (including TOEFL, TOEIC, Pearson, City & Guilds) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. Since the Trinity College London language tests must be taken in one of their exam centres in the UK, IELTS is now the only language test accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK that can be taken worldwide.

The IELTS test is most widely accepted by universities and is also accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK- learn more.
