Our research is characterised by a critical cultural studies approach, with PhD supervision normally available in the following research areas:

Media, national, ethnic, sexed and gendered identities

Gender, sexuality, media and culture
Motherhood and parenting culture and social reproduction, emotions and the media
Journalism and news studies
Critical discourse studies

PhD research is supported by intensive subject-specific supervision, training in research methodologies and core skills, and opportunities to participate in research seminars and masterclasses. In addition, our Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate School organises a comprehensive training programme for PhD students that covers research techniques and professional/key skills, and provides support for personal development.
An upper-second-class Honours degree and preferably a merit master's degree, or an international equivalent.
Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5, Pearson's PTE Academic Test 62 or equivalent.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
