Materials Engineering encompasses the fundamental work that underpins the development, specification and engineering applications of new and existing materials. It focuses on the understanding of physical and chemical descriptions that underlie materials performance and developing property and performance models. Research areas include kinetics and formation mechanisms of new materials and predictive modelling based upon mechanistic understanding. Work in this area covers the production, property measurement and performance assessment of ceramics, polymers, metals and composites, in particular the development of new materials for advanced engineering applications (including microelectronics, optics and power transmission).

Current research includes: developing novel surface engineering processes and materials (such as fullerene-like coating materials); energy-based methods for performance modelling; nanomaterials and nanocharacterisation techniques; and novel materials for intensified processes. The measurement and modelling of the mechanical response of materials at high-spatial resolution, particularly in microelectronic and optical devices, is a major specialism of the School and is supported by a combination of unique equipment and interdisciplinary expertise.

Another significant research focus is the materials requirements for the sustainable development and use of key resources, in particular water and energy, with significant research into generation of energy from novel sources, low carbon and renewable technologies and the clean-up of effluent and wastewater. The major areas of research are: fuel cells and energy systems; gasification; cold plasma gasification; bio-fuel cells; bio-diesel production; gas and water treatment; nano-structured polymer composites for pollution control; sustainable and environmental electrochemical systems; and photochemical processes and electrochemical synthesis.

Course Content

The School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials runs a postgraduate training programme that is compulsory for all new students and involves selected taught modules. You also receive research training from the Science, Agriculture and Engineering Graduate School that covers professional/key skills, personal development and research techniques. You have the opportunity to supplement your income by undertaking laboratory demonstrating and tutorial classes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Per 6 April 2015 only the English language tests from IELTS and Trinity College London are accepted for Tier 4 Visa applications to the United Kingdom. Other tests (including TOEFL, TOEIC, Pearson, City & Guilds) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. Since the Trinity College London language tests must be taken in one of their exam centres in the UK, IELTS is now the only language test accepted for Tier 4 visas to the UK that can be taken worldwide.

Requirements for Materials Engineering

An upper-second-class Honours degree and preferably a master’s degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant discipline.

Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme, applicants will be informed of this in the offer letter.
