Our Philosophy program at Stanford University is well known for its small size, streamlined teaching requirements, and low average time to degree. Programme Structure
Research areas:
- Our Ph.D. program trains students in traditional core areas of philosophy and provides them with opportunities to explore many subfields such as the philosophy of literature, nineteenth-century German philosophy, and medieval philosophy.
- Among other areas, we are exceptionally strong in Kant studies, the philosophy of action, ancient philosophy, logic, and the philosophy of science.

General requirements
- Official e-transcripts can be sent directly by the school or clearinghouse. Please upload an unofficial transcript from each school you attended for a year or more with the application.
- Writing Sample: should be a recent writing sample on a philosophical topic. We recommend you send an example of your best work (typically samples are around 20 pages or less)
- The application requires a minimum of 3 recommendations.
- Grad admissions requires the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for most applicants whose first language is not English. This includes US citizens as well as international students.
