This PhD integrates structured coursework in applied linguistics/English language teaching and research skills training with the production of an original research thesis.

The PhD is ordinarily completed in four years. As it consists entirely of individually supervised research, there are no taught courses. In addition to degrees in Philosophy, the programme also encourages students to consider an interdisciplinary doctorate in collaboration with participating College Schools. As examples, a candidate may wish
to receive a PhD in:
* Physics, with special mention in Philosophy
* Law, with special mention in Philosophy
* English and Drama, with special mention in Philosophy
* Politics, with special mention in Philosophy
* Modern Languages, with special mention in Philosophy.
In some cases, the collaboration of more than one participating department may be possible, subject to special arrangements being made. Previous study in philosophy is not required, but all applicants will be assessed with a view towards their likelihood of success.

We offer close personal supervision to students in a wide variety of areas, with particular strengths in the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and psychology, metaphysics and philosophy of science, ethics and politics, and philosophy of language and linguistics. The many expert researchers in the department all give a high priority to providing the best possible teaching. We co-operate closely with the other philosophy departments in London (especially University College, Birkbeck College, Heythrop College, and the London School of Economics). This intercollegiate system effectively makes available to students a further 50 or so philosophers in London. This enables you to have a base in a department offering a high degree of personal attention while also having intercollegiate access to a wide variety of approaches to and specialisations in philosophy.
