About

History

From Queen's College to National University of Ireland, the University's past is intertwined with the history of Galway and Ireland.The Quadrangle first opened its doors to 63 students on 30th October 1849 and the University, then known as Queen's College was born. The University was one of three Queen's Colleges, the others located in Cork and Belfast.

Housing services

The NUI Galway Accommodation Office are here to help you in your search for a place to live. The staff can help you find appropriate accommodation in Student Residences, flats, apartments or houses. They can also help if problems arise with property owners.

Library services

The Library provides a variety of study spaces for staff, students and researchers of the University. These range from individual study spaces for quiet study, group study rooms where students can work together on projects, to the browsing room aimed at providing a place to take a break from serious study by reading a newspaper or a novel.

Medical services

The Student Health Service provides on-campus medical and psychiatric care to registered students of the university in a professional, courteous, and confidential manner.

The campus has been transformed over the past decade through the 400 million capital programme. With over 90 buildings on 105 hectares of land, the University is right in the heart of Galway city.

NUI Galway recognises the relationship between academic performance, health and wellbeing and in support of this the Sport and Recreation Unit has a mission to promote participation in sport and physical activities by all students and staff and to support higher standards of performance in sport and physical activity for elite sports individuals and teams within NUI Galway.
