Brussels School of International Studies

Brussels School of International Studies (BSIS) is a multidisciplinary postgraduate School of the University of Kent bringing together the disciplines of politics, international relations, law and economics to provide in-depth analysis of international problems such as conflict, security, development, migration and the political economy and legal basis of a changing world order.

History

  • Founded: 1998

Education

Masters degrees obtained from Kent, like most Chartered institutions in the United Kingdom, are suitable for entry to the PhD programmes in the United Kingdom or the United States (provided the candidate has performed to an appropriate level).

Research

Our research is a critical component of our success as a postgraduate School. Our teaching is underpinned by the high quality research undertaken by our teaching staff and our research students. BSIS is a multidisciplinary School and thus much of our research is informed by the critical presence of those with different disciplinary backgrounds through a weekly research seminar. But it is also strengthened by the links with our core contributing Schools in the University.

Our presence in Brussels also provides a context for much of our research; close contact with the European institutions, NATO and the many other international and non-governmental organisations provides an important policy context for research.

Student services

At the University of Kent’s Brussels campus, with students from so many different countries, we recognise that attending university abroad may be a daunting experience for many. With this in mind we have arranged a cross-section of support services designed to ensure that can get the most out of your time in Brussels and be able to focus upon your studies.

Student Support can help students with a range of concerns from how to apply for funding for equipment and helpers to discussing special arrangements for exams. Assistance is available according to specific needs and staff in Cantebury have many years experience in assisting students from around the world with individual queries.

Housing services

At the University of Kent’s Brussels campus, with students from so many different countries, we understand that finding a place to live during your studies can be nervewracking. Try not to panic though as with a little preparation in advance, this is not a difficult process.

Most students worry about finding accommodation ahead of arrival but there are lots of options for accommodation and we find that ost students find somewhere to live wtihin one or two weeks after arrival, sometimes earlier.

Library services

  • ULB has four main libraries
  • The VUB library contains roughly 400,000 volumes, mostly kept at the Central Library
  • Brussels has a range of specialist libraries including the Royal Library, the Library of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, the Central Library of the European Commission, and the Library of the Embassy of the United States of America.

ICT services

Brussels students have full electronic access to all University of Kent online facilities through their Kent ID login.

The University of Kent WiFi service eduroam can be used with a Kent IT account, and by visitors from other eduroam institutions.

Medical services

All foreign residents in Belgium are required by law to have health coverage. Belgium’s mutualités offer excellent coverage at around €25 a month. However, there is often a six-month waiting period to enrol.

Campus life

Students of the Brussels School of International Studies have access to a wide range of facilities, including several libraries, electronic information services and computing facilities.

There are campus restaurants and cafeterias that offer subsidised meals and students have access to excellent sports and leisure facilities.

Sports facilities

We encourage all students to take part in regular exercise and to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise helps improve your general well-being and mental health, reduces depression and anxiety and enhances coginitive functioning.

There are a number of gyms within Brussels plus regular sporting events, including the Brussels 20k (a 20 kilometre run that has taken place annually since 1980) and international sporting events.

All degrees and certificates awarded for study on any programme at the Brussels School of International Studies are awarded by the University of Kent, and they are conferred by the University at its normal Congregation ceremonies in Canterbury Cathedral.
