Nord University admits exchange students from partner institutions from around the world and supports a lively and diverse student community. On January 1, 2016, University of Nordland, Nord-Trøndelag University College and Nesna University College merge and become Nord University.

In Bodø, Nord University is located at Mørkved, approximately 8 kilometres east of Bodø's city centre. The campus was established in 1985, and has since then been expanded as the university has grown. The last part of the construction was finished in 2005, and includes a new and modern library as well as a new entrance area. UIN also has one campus in Campus Helgeland(Mo i Rana) and one campus in Vesterålen ( Stokmarknes).

The Royal Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research hereby confirms the legal status of the Nord University as a state education and research institution with recognised programs for the Bachelor`s, Master`s degrees and doctoral education programs, receiving funds from the Ministry of Education and Research following decision budget allocations in the National Assembly.

The university`s legal basis and governing document is the Act relating to Universities and University colleges. As set forth in the Act, Nord University is a non-profit organization conducting education and research.
