The university at a glance 2011/2012
Established on August 6th, 1868 as a Royal Business College, Ca Foscari University was the first educational institution in Italy to offer higher education in business and economics.
Ca Foscari International College of the Ca Foscari University of Venice offers undergraduate courses to promising young students showing outstanding skills and merit, for interdisciplinary competencies and a highly international outlook. The programme is characterized by the creation of a community living together in a dedicated location in Venice-Italy. Scholarships covering the full cost of fees and accommodation for the academic year are provided.
Educational Offer and Organization
Since 2011/2012 a.y. Ca Foscari educational offer has been organised in First and Second Cycle Degree Programmes, Master's Degree Programmes (2 years) and PhD Programmes which refer directly to the 8 new Departments (Asian and North African Studies; Economics; Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics; Humanities; Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies; Management; Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems; Philosophy and Cultural Heritage), 6 Interdepartmental Schools (Asian Studies and Business Management; Cultural Production and Conservation of the Cultural Heritage; Global Development; International Relations; Social Work and Public Policies; Sustainability of Environmental and Tourism Systems) and the Ca Foscari Challenge School, Ca Foscari Summer School and Graduate School.
The main building is Ca Foscari Palace, the Venetian-Gothic building located on the largest bend of the Grand Canal.
Following a recent reform, Italian Universities now confer three main degrees, patterned along the three-level scheme common to several education systems across the world.
The first-level degree is a three-year Laurea. This is an undergraduate program equivalent to a Bachelor. The second-level degree is a two-year Laurea Specialistica. This is a graduate program equivalent to a Master. Possession of a first-level degree is required to access the Laurea Specialistica.
The third-level degree is a three-year Dottorato di Ricerca. This is a post-graduate program equivalent to a Ph.D. Possession of a second-level degree is required to access the Dottorato di Ricerca.
In addition to these main degrees, the system allows for two intermediate degrees known as Master program. This terminology is unfortunate, because it can lead to misunderstanding. The Master universitario di primo livello is a one-year graduate program which is open to holders of a first-level degree. The Master universitario di secondo livello is a one-year graduate program which is open to holders of a second-level degree.
