Our postgraduate students follow a wide variety of taught and research programmes.

A distinctive feature of our postgraduate culture is our Practice as Research PhD’s offered within Music, Fine Art, and Event and Experience Design. PaR PhD students undertake a substantial research project guided by supportive and accessible supervisors with international reputations in their field of expertise.

Research

Our dynamic interdisciplinary culture is platformed through the Sound–Image–Space Research Centre (SISRC) and further developed through a rich programme of research seminars and symposia. This center takes ‘sound’ ‘image’ and ‘space’ in the widest senses of the terms, space may be physical, psychic, conceptual or pictorial, an image can be 2d, 3d or of thought and sound, phenomenological or environmental.

Career

School of Music and Fine Art programmes combine academic rigour, personal development, life skills and career opportunities. Our students prepare for the work place through formal placements, professional preparation or assignments that replicate real life career challenges.

According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the creative industries provide around two million jobs in the UK, in the creative sector itself and in creative roles in other sectors. Encouragingly, employment in the sector has grown at double the rate of the economy as a whole.

Student services

The School supports new international students’ transition through the student mentoring scheme.

Student mentors provide information on studying and living in the UK. The School also provides English Language support for students who may need it.

International students are encouraged to join the events that are organised centrally by the university’s International Development Office.

Medical services

The School take the welfare of students and staff very seriously.

In support of this the University has a clear and rigorous policy concerning Health and Safety which is regularly reviewed and revised, and which involves both the routine assessment of health and safety risks in the working (teaching and learning) environment, and the prompt reporting of any accident or hazard.

Campus life

The School of Music and Fine Art's multi-million pound Medway development is located within the award-winning Chatham Historic Dockyard, a short walk from the University of Kent at Medway's Pembroke campus.

This amazing 20 acre river-front site incorporates a fantastic range of historic buildings, small businesses and exhibition spaces. Medway campus is part of Chatham Maritime which includes a multiplex cinema, a large retail outlet centre and a number of bars and restaurants, all within walking distance of the main campus.
